Kathleen Wright founded Garden of Yoga in 1983. Garden of Yoga has continued to serve the western suburbs even as Kathleen was a founding member of Yoga Circle in Chicago and Wild Onion Yoga of Chicago.

Our first home was in the Western Springs Recreation Center (demolished and since rebuilt), we still have loyal students from the first classes that attend classes to this day.

Today, we have a beautiful, fully equipped Yoga studio, lecture space, and a healing consultation room in LaGrange, IL. All of our teachers are dedicated practitioners of Yoga and other healing arts. All classes are conducted in a professional and friendly manner.

Garden of Yoga provides Yoga classes six days a week, for even the busiest schedules and Sunday Specials - 3 hour special topic workshops. We also sponsor fine teachers from out of town.

We are also "home" to Alive and Well, a fabulous resource for lecturers and practitioners in Thai Massage Therapy, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Flower Essence Therapy and Therapeutic Yoga.

What is Yoga

Yoga is an ancient and timeless art, science, philosophy, and medicine that emphasizes performing one's daily responsibilities with awareness, integrity, and compassion.

Yoga involves daily practice of Yoga postures and breathing exercises that work the anatomical, physiological, mental intellectual, and spiritual layers of our lives. Working through the concreteness of the body, Yoga teaches us to observe and integrate the body, breath, and mind. You can adopt Yoga into your lifestyle.

Common Misconceptions

You do not have to be "in shape," young, or flexible to learn Yoga. We welcome you whatever your current condition and proceed from wherever you are when you begin. Also, Yoga is the study and observations of one's spirituality; it is not a religion.

What is Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is based on the teachings of living Yoga master BKS Iyengar, known affectionately as Guruji, and the author of Light on Yoga. Geeta and Prashant, daughter and son of Guruji, are also great teachers and authors on yoga. The Iyengar family's teachings are deeply grounded in the ancient yoga tradition. Gurujis's intense practice and over 70 years of teaching have produced significant innovations. Among the most noteworthy are:

  • emphasis on standing poses to develop strength, stability, stamina and concentration
  • use of props to facilitate learning
  • sequencing of postures to bring clarity and maturity to the practice
  • deep knowledge of Yoga used to ease various ailments and stress
